Daniel Dworsky: Music

Boats

(Daniel Dworsky)
I had such trouble with the words to this tune. It just always seemed clumsy and self conscious and my Brother Rafi kept saying "Hmmm"
That was it - just "Hmmm" like it needs work but he didn't say that he just said "Hmmm" It was Damia who sent it off to Billboard after I said, "I don't need to pay some magazine people thirteen dollars and fifty cents to tell me what I all ready know. Nice tune but the words are... well... Hmmm.
there's continuity problems... Louis Satterfield (DaMia's Dad) had to ask me what the words meant (and he understood everything about everything related to everything.)

I had brought this tune to a Hoyty Toyty Santa Monica writers workshop where half the cast of Stand and Deliver and this totally pompous English lit professor who was running the scam trashed it to pieces. So either DaMia sent it either that or badgered me into sending it or sent it off herself.
(It was after all, 15 years ago) to Billboard.
The short of it is that it won me enough equipment and cash and hype to power me through producing my first CD Ghosts In The Well which I can barely give away now but It was bootlegged out in the thousands by all kinds of people with great musical taste and no morals.
Pretty and useless
Like the river in the winter time
Like the winter in a river time
I'm clever that way.
You caught me sleeping in the springtime.
I'll not let summer slip away.

If only you could be here now.
If only it hadn't been so long.
If only we could meet some how,
I'd find the strength to go on

Running lights flicker chilly and dry
Against the stars tonight.
Such lights show me the way home.
Somewhere you learn to discern from these flames,
Simple choices of wrong,
Less wrong,
And right.

I feel like a boat on the Mississippi
That never saw an ocean nor a sea
Or some poor little canvas clown out on the mainstream.
I just followed the river down.

Liike the wall to the holy city
Like the sailer to the sea
like the dark to the shallow waters,
You mean all these things to me.

I feel like a boat on the Mississippi
That never saw an ocean nor a sea
Or some poor little canvas clown out on the mainstream.
I just followed the river down.

Wars are over sooner than you think sometimes.
Your rivers and your oceans rhyme.
I'm on my way.

You caught me sleeping in the springtime,
I've not let summer slip away.
I've not let summer slip away.
